I’m currently doing an Internship with high end ethical trade company Tamielle. www.tamielle.com My role is to create motifs and boarders for a set of new products. It is very hands on as I do everything straight onto fabrics using mostly hand embroidery and bead work. However this suits me down to the ground as I hardly ever use the computer to design. I have an idea in my head, I spend thirty seconds doodling it and immediately move onto the fabric.
I feel that my designs evolve like a painting would. I take time considering composition, colour, size and shape and will undo stitches and adjust colours if a component is not working. Just as an artist might paint over bits they’re not happy with.
I’m extremely happy with how the internship is going and will be sad when it is over. I have moved on so much since graduating and feel much more confident in my work and ability, something that held me back in my time at university.
However I am greatly looking forward to learning more and seeing what comes my way. I have a pretty packed few months finishing my internship and beginning a new one at Hallmark Cards, a stall in the graduate showcase section of the Knitting and Stitching show www.twistedthread.com/pages/exhibitions/viewExhibition.aspx?id=32 and a meeting with Sophie Conran! www.sophieconran.com
